What Your Mission and Vision Statements Can Reveal About Your Business

Posted on by Tracy in accountability, Alaska, business, Coaching, entrepreneur, focus, foundation, goals, growth, Mission Statement, Social Media, vision, Vision Board | No Comments

When I first thought of creating a business in 1999, I hired a business advisor to help me get the business off the ground. The first steps seemed so painful at the time. I had never owned a business and had many fears. The business advisor’s job was to see to it that I was serious about the business – that I was ‘willing to go to any length’ to make the business work, run, grow and succeed. Success was defined by paying my bills, growing a savings account, and enjoying what I was doing, both personally and business-wise. The first and most important task was the business plan. Today, in coaching sessions with my clients, I recommend that they create a Vision Board. The reason is that Vision Boards are creative and visual, and, essentially, your business plan laid out.  I use colors, i.e. markers, colored stickies, stickers, anything to create fun and flowing visions. My Vision Board for 2016 hangs on my office wall for me to see …

Secrets Revealed By Land’s End Resort

Start Play I had the privilege of interviewing Land’s End Resort Sales and Marketing Director Mike Dye on Biz Vision with Alaska Tracy Podcast. Remember to download Alaska Tracy’s Free Gift at the end of these show notes! To be perfectly honest, I was a little nervous about this interview as Land’s End is well known to Alaskans as being the go-to place when staying in Homer. Alaskans provide 50% of their business! Land’s End location is perfectly situated at the end of the Homer Spit. The views of the ocean and mountains are priceless. I was fortunate enough to capture this moonrise from our bedroom (photo above)! What a pleasant surprise it was when I met with Mike. I had asked him if he would talk about Land’s End Mission and Vision statements and share three to five secrets to Land’s End success. When I sat down to talk …

Finding Your Purpose

Where do you begin? So, you have a fantastic idea for a business.  You are over the moon about it and start telling everyone about it, announcing it on Social Media, reserving the URL, creating a Facebook Page…the whole works.  Then a week later, you have a different idea, a different direction you want to go.  So… you start chasing that dream. Maybe this happens a few times. Guess what?  You are not alone.  Many people do this over and over until they find their true purpose… what actually will excite them for the long haul. Throughout the years, I have asked people if they know their life mission.  I have received an array of answers.  When I ask specifically if they are fulfilling their mission by doing what they love career-wise, I get one of two answers:  “yes” or “no”. The “no” people tell me they work so they …

Are You Leaving Them Clueless?

Posted on by Tracy in Alaska, Anchorage, business, Facebook, growth, Social Community, Social Media, Success | No Comments

When I get hired to coach or consult a person or a business, the first thing I do is go to any place where they could give me information about what they do.  Any place that they can promote the business or company, ie; Twitter, LinkedIn, blog/website… any and ALL Social Media profiles. The goal is for someone to be able to quickly identify what you do, what products you sell, and how they may get a hold of you if they need your product or your service.  Quick is KEY. We live in a very LOUD digital world where things move at lightening speed. People don’t like to have to search for something.  You can be intriguing, just don’t be secretive and leave people questioning what you do or who you are. So….don’t lead them on a rabbit trail.  If you do, they may not go down that trail, but …

Vision Board Creation ~ Simplified

Posted on by Tracy in business, entrepreneur, goals, Grow, growth, struggle, Success, vision | No Comments

How many times have you heard the word Vision Board and thought,  that is so ‘woo-woo‘? From time to time I run into small business owners that have felt ‘stuck’ in their business and I have shared the Vision Board process.  Often times they tune me out before I fully explain how it works. I have even had people say that vision boards go against their beliefs in life. I get the impression people think that Vision Boards are cutting up pretty pictures of big fancy homes and cars and pasting them on a board.   After that, you sit back and bingo!!! The magic happens!!  All the visions become reality!  So, that would be like saying, ‘hello Universe let me tell you ALL my WANTS and NEEDS so you can give them to me’. This has NOT been my experience.  Quite the opposite actually.  It is usually a painful, fearful experience at first. …

Combating Head Chatter

Working alone as an entrepreneur or business owner can be challenging.  Often times it’s the ‘head chatter’ that makes for the challenge. How do you combat your ‘head chatter’? Here are several tools that have worked and continue to work for me: 1: Take a Personality Test.  Doing this can give you some insight into how to best complement your personality type so that you can keep your ‘head’ in check. Introverts and Extroverts need different activities to get inspired or motivated and knowing which type of personality you are is a fantastic place to start!  I spent years doing things that didn’t suit my personality type and was often exhausted and had body ailments that could have been avoided. 2. Meditation.  Meditation is all about quieting the mind – not stopping the mind, but slowing it down. Learning to slow down and listen to what our bodies and our hearts are telling us will allow us to give ourselves …

How I Became Successful

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” –Albert Einstein What does success mean to you?  To me success is following my heart.  In doing so, I have been able to create a heart centered business.  When I follow my heart, I am able to be useful to others.  When I am of use to others all sorts of opportunities become available (including money).  If I continually think about what is in it for me and how can I get MORE, business and life become a struggle. About eight years ago, I sold a mobile dog grooming business that I had started in Anchorage, AK. My husband and I had hit a little bump in the road of life and I got busy looking for a new career. My background was marketing and sales. My heart and soul fought what I was doing entering a real estate career… and yet… …

Humanizing Your Business

Posted on by Tracy in business, communicate, entrepreneur | No Comments

What comes to mind when you hear the word Humanize? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary definition, it means “to make (someone or something) seem gentler, kinder, or more appealing to people.”   For years, businesses and organizations have been trying to brand and sell themselves or their products via print, radio, TV, websites, and digital marketing (social media), etc. These are all effective platforms for creating consumer awareness and ultimately growing a business.  But…   …what if you heard that your business could multiply simply by being gentler, kinder and more appealing to people? Being married to a ‘numbers’ guy, I would probably get, “What does that MEAN” and, “What are the numbers to support that statement?”     I have grown multiple businesses, my own included, by simply teaching people how to share their stories, lift others up (or promote others), engage in conversations, and then ask for their support. I have the numbers in …

Success via Twitter

Posted on by Tracy in socialmedia | No Comments

One of the benefits of Twitter in my biz (and life) is this amazing connection to people all over the globe! When I speak about humanizing businesses via Social Media / Marketing, people ask me all the time- “but really, how has Twitter put money in your pocket”? I LOVE that question! One example; I had a potential new client seek out our services, this client was rather large involving 5 businesses. I was ‘stuck’ and a bit fearful on my proposal and moving forward. One of my Twitter connections is a biz consultant on the East Coast. Because of Twitter we have built a relationship. I was able to reach out to him via the old PHONE and discuss ways to prepare the proposal. His help was invaluable, as is his continued support on Twitter that is helping to grow me my business. Twitter has increased my data base, income, …

5 Key Steps to Social Media Success

Posted on by Tracy in business | No Comments

After an hour consultation with a business owner yesterday, I am again reminded that many businesses do not have a clue about the benefits of Social Media and the impact it can have on their overall growth. Here are 5 key steps that you can do today to start growing a social media ‘tribe’ that can grow your business. 1.  Pick one social media platform ie; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+ and spend 15 minutes five days a week learning how to use it. Do this for 3 weeks. 2.  Follow, like, connect with the gurus using that platform in your industry. Watch  what they are doing and do what they are doing (without copying).  Ask them questions with an open mind that you will learn from them.  Many times people feel too competitive to do this.  Realize there is enough business to go around…if you can’t do this look …

Don’t Forget to Ask

Posted on by Tracy in socialmedia | No Comments

Oh, the mystery of Social Media! How does one use social media to attract clients, customers, and buyers as a means to sustaining one’s livelihood? I was on a coaching call with an entrepreneur yesterday. As I was reviewing her Facebook business page, I noticed that she was attracting thousands of followers and generating hundreds of comments, likes and shares on each of her posts!   I usually don’t see this kind of action on a business page and was thrilled for her! I then asked the question: “How are your sales via Facebook?”  Dead silence followed. She said that she had sold only two products via Facebook in over a year. I asked her if she wanted to know the secret to getting more sales via social media and, of course, she said “Yes!” I told her that she must begin to ASK people to buy her product! If she asked and also provided her customers with directions to her product’s landing page, I knew she would see …

One Simple Way to Build Community

Posted on by Tracy in Social Media Tribe, Uncategorized | No Comments

The theme I am noticing from clients and from within my own life this week seems to be the question: “How do I grow my community?”  Oh, the answers that I have for friends and clients alike are quite simple, yet often not so easy to do and do consistently. In my experience and according to countless others who have gone before me, this one strategy works in growing a happy, joyous and prosperous lifestyle 100% of the time. Ready? Here it is…….be a GIVER, not a taker.  How will you know when it is working? Your focus will shift and others will start to enter your mind more and more.  You will eventually attract the exact community that you are wishing for. When we remove the focus from “what can I get out of this,” to “how can we give back to businesses, people, and the communities we live in,” we are able to attract others into our own worlds.  We are able …

You Can Still See the Sun on a Rough and Rocky Road

Posted on by Tracy in entrepreneur, Uncategorized | No Comments

It’s the one year anniversary from when I left my full-time, stable job as a marketing representative at First American Title to become a ‘starving artist’ full-time. And boy, has this last year been a trip! First of all, I have definitely not starved, thanks to my wonderfully supportive husband who still has his full-time, stable job. And for that, I am very thankful. In this past year, I have come to the realization that I will have to be a part-time ‘starving artist’ for the next few years to come. ‘Why?’ you ask…I had coffee with the wonderful and wise watercolor artist, Karla Morriera, a few months ago. I asked her for general advice and advice specific to art. But, one of the things she asked me that really stuck with me was, ‘You have to decide whether you want to be a full-time artist or a part-time artist.’ …

Big Ole’ Entrepreneurial Speed Bump!

Posted on by Tracy in business, Uncategorized | 1 Comment

I have found that having a mentor in life, or a coach in business, helps me to grow.  I have had many of these throughout my 11 plus years in business.  I recently connected with a mentor that has helped me throughout many of my businesses, including the first one where I created a mobile dog grooming business in Anchorage, Alaska. (It is still running around on its 3rd owner)! Through all of the ups and downs and in-betweens, she has been a role model and tremendous help when it comes to brainstorming. The business world always amazes me, and always has since 2001 when I first started the entrepreneurial path. Visualize it. Create the path. Take the actions to achieve the goal! Oh… and work, work, work, and give, give, give to others; and then when you feel like you have nothing more to offer, GIVE MORE! Last but …

The Illusional Truth of Entrepreneurship

There is so much that goes into starting and running a successful business.  I get emails all the time from folks asking for advice on how to start their own biz. I believe anyone can be a biz owner; however, one must realize ALL that is involved. I recently heard from someone who said she wanted to do what I do and take a step back, allowing her to put in less work hours per day. I reread the email to my husband and he said, “You must be making it look too easy.” See, the reality is hours and hours and then more hours go into the life of a biz owner. (One that is enriched and paying their bills, that is.) I love to hike, so, some days, I try to arrange my schedule and work in the evenings. Because my evenings are not filled with any hobbies …

What’s a true joy in my life? I get to help others that are looking to start a business. In the past month, I have been approached by folks right out of college with no clue how to go about creating a successful business. For a second, it confused me. I have a two-year degree, and I suppose I just assumed a four-year degree would provide insight on how to create and run a business. So, why not spread my knowledge, you wonder? Well, it has sparked my interest to pursue teaching at universities. Teaching the “how-to’s” and the “ins-and-outs” of being an entrepreneur. These people have reminded me of what I knew back when I started my first business in 2001. I have been reminded of the challenges, heart aches and all the successes. This will be the first entrepreneurial blog in a series, and now it’s time for me to ask you some questions. Below are four questions you must …
