What Your Mission and Vision Statements Can Reveal About Your Business

When I first thought of creating a business in 1999, I hired a business advisor to help me get the business off the ground. The first steps seemed so painful at the time. I had never owned a business and had many fears. The business advisor’s job was to see to it that I was serious about the business – that I was ‘willing to go to any length’ to make the business work, run, grow and succeed. Success was defined by paying my bills, growing a savings account, and enjoying what I was doing, both personally and business-wise. The first and most important task was the business plan. Today, in coaching sessions with my clients, I recommend that they create a Vision Board. The reason is that Vision Boards are creative and visual, and, essentially, your business plan laid out.  I use colors, i.e. markers, colored stickies, stickers, anything to create fun and flowing visions. My Vision Board for 2016 hangs on my office wall for me to see …

Secrets Revealed By Land’s End Resort

Start Play I had the privilege of interviewing Land’s End Resort Sales and Marketing Director Mike Dye on Biz Vision with Alaska Tracy Podcast. Remember to download Alaska Tracy’s Free Gift at the end of these show notes! To be perfectly honest, I was a little nervous about this interview as Land’s End is well known to Alaskans as being the go-to place when staying in Homer. Alaskans provide 50% of their business! Land’s End location is perfectly situated at the end of the Homer Spit. The views of the ocean and mountains are priceless. I was fortunate enough to capture this moonrise from our bedroom (photo above)! What a pleasant surprise it was when I met with Mike. I had asked him if he would talk about Land’s End Mission and Vision statements and share three to five secrets to Land’s End success. When I sat down to talk …

Finding Your Purpose

Where do you begin? So, you have a fantastic idea for a business.  You are over the moon about it and start telling everyone about it, announcing it on Social Media, reserving the URL, creating a Facebook Page…the whole works.  Then a week later, you have a different idea, a different direction you want to go.  So… you start chasing that dream. Maybe this happens a few times. Guess what?  You are not alone.  Many people do this over and over until they find their true purpose… what actually will excite them for the long haul. Throughout the years, I have asked people if they know their life mission.  I have received an array of answers.  When I ask specifically if they are fulfilling their mission by doing what they love career-wise, I get one of two answers:  “yes” or “no”. The “no” people tell me they work so they …

Stop Ignoring Them?

Social Media can be tricky, however once you get the basics rules down growth is endless! Over and over and over I see this mistake being made on Social Media.  The mistake that could grow a companies following and their life. I share this from personal experience, watching and working with countless businesses.  It is usually the very first mistake I discuss when coaching and consulting.   When people start taking these simple actions, they are often blown away with the power they provide. Curious? Let me explain with an example.  You enter an elevator and someone says hello, and asks you how you are.  You ignore that person.  You then go to the grocery store, and the cashier asks you a question, again, you ignore that person. Hmmmm…..how do you think the person feels?  How would or could a person function in life doing this?  They probably would not …

Vision Board Creation ~ Simplified

Posted on by Tracy in business, entrepreneur, goals, Grow, growth, struggle, Success, vision | No Comments

How many times have you heard the word Vision Board and thought,  that is so ‘woo-woo‘? From time to time I run into small business owners that have felt ‘stuck’ in their business and I have shared the Vision Board process.  Often times they tune me out before I fully explain how it works. I have even had people say that vision boards go against their beliefs in life. I get the impression people think that Vision Boards are cutting up pretty pictures of big fancy homes and cars and pasting them on a board.   After that, you sit back and bingo!!! The magic happens!!  All the visions become reality!  So, that would be like saying, ‘hello Universe let me tell you ALL my WANTS and NEEDS so you can give them to me’. This has NOT been my experience.  Quite the opposite actually.  It is usually a painful, fearful experience at first. …

Combating Head Chatter

Working alone as an entrepreneur or business owner can be challenging.  Often times it’s the ‘head chatter’ that makes for the challenge. How do you combat your ‘head chatter’? Here are several tools that have worked and continue to work for me: 1: Take a Personality Test.  Doing this can give you some insight into how to best complement your personality type so that you can keep your ‘head’ in check. Introverts and Extroverts need different activities to get inspired or motivated and knowing which type of personality you are is a fantastic place to start!  I spent years doing things that didn’t suit my personality type and was often exhausted and had body ailments that could have been avoided. 2. Meditation.  Meditation is all about quieting the mind – not stopping the mind, but slowing it down. Learning to slow down and listen to what our bodies and our hearts are telling us will allow us to give ourselves …

How I Became Successful

Posted on by Tracy in business, entrepreneur, Facebook, focus, goals, linkedin, Social Community, spiritual experience, Twitter, Uncategorized | No Comments

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” –Albert Einstein What does success mean to you?  To me success is following my heart.  In doing so, I have been able to create a heart centered business.  When I follow my heart, I am able to be useful to others.  When I am of use to others all sorts of opportunities become available (including money).  If I continually think about what is in it for me and how can I get MORE, business and life become a struggle. About eight years ago, I sold a mobile dog grooming business that I had started in Anchorage, AK. My husband and I had hit a little bump in the road of life and I got busy looking for a new career. My background was marketing and sales. My heart and soul fought what I was doing entering a real estate career… and yet… …

Humanizing Your Business

Posted on by Tracy in business, communicate, entrepreneur | No Comments

What comes to mind when you hear the word Humanize? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary definition, it means “to make (someone or something) seem gentler, kinder, or more appealing to people.”   For years, businesses and organizations have been trying to brand and sell themselves or their products via print, radio, TV, websites, and digital marketing (social media), etc. These are all effective platforms for creating consumer awareness and ultimately growing a business.  But…   …what if you heard that your business could multiply simply by being gentler, kinder and more appealing to people? Being married to a ‘numbers’ guy, I would probably get, “What does that MEAN” and, “What are the numbers to support that statement?”     I have grown multiple businesses, my own included, by simply teaching people how to share their stories, lift others up (or promote others), engage in conversations, and then ask for their support. I have the numbers in …

Measurement of Success

Posted on by Tracy in entrepreneur, Uncategorized | No Comments

Author: Nicole Forto Success is often defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, an attainment of one’s goals and dreams. However, I have come to learn that success isn’t just the accomplishment of one’s dreams. A person is not born with success. Nor is it something that is thrust upon you due to wealth, strength, intelligence, or beauty. Rather, success is earned through rigorous effort. I define success not by the accomplishment at the end of the game, finish line, recital, or test but by the long journey I take to get there. Mushing has shown me that to be a success doesn’t mean you have to be a first place champion. It has shown me that believing in yourself and pushing through the good and bad times is where you measure how successful you are. Whether I was coming in first on the racing finish line or …

You Can Still See the Sun on a Rough and Rocky Road

Posted on by Tracy in entrepreneur, Uncategorized | No Comments

It’s the one year anniversary from when I left my full-time, stable job as a marketing representative at First American Title to become a ‘starving artist’ full-time. And boy, has this last year been a trip! First of all, I have definitely not starved, thanks to my wonderfully supportive husband who still has his full-time, stable job. And for that, I am very thankful. In this past year, I have come to the realization that I will have to be a part-time ‘starving artist’ for the next few years to come. ‘Why?’ you ask…I had coffee with the wonderful and wise watercolor artist, Karla Morriera, a few months ago. I asked her for general advice and advice specific to art. But, one of the things she asked me that really stuck with me was, ‘You have to decide whether you want to be a full-time artist or a part-time artist.’ …

The Illusional Truth of Entrepreneurship

Posted on by Tracy in authentic, business, Challenge, Embrace, entrepreneur, focus, goals, Gratitude, Grow, growth, life, Perception, struggle, Success, Uncategorized | No Comments

There is so much that goes into starting and running a successful business.  I get emails all the time from folks asking for advice on how to start their own biz. I believe anyone can be a biz owner; however, one must realize ALL that is involved. I recently heard from someone who said she wanted to do what I do and take a step back, allowing her to put in less work hours per day. I reread the email to my husband and he said, “You must be making it look too easy.” See, the reality is hours and hours and then more hours go into the life of a biz owner. (One that is enriched and paying their bills, that is.) I love to hike, so, some days, I try to arrange my schedule and work in the evenings. Because my evenings are not filled with any hobbies …
